Ruidoso Mountain Biking - New Mexico
The Ruidoso, NM area is famous for the beauty and
variety of its biking terrain. Road bikes can explore many miles of
winding paved roads throughout Lincoln and Otero Counties as well as
the Mescalero Apache Reservation. Many world class bicyclists train
here to enjoy the moderate temperatures and build lung capacity in
the high elevations. The ultimate local road bike challenge is the
major climb up to Ski Apache on the 12 mile long Hwy. 532, also
known as “ski run road”. You gain over 2,500 feet from the base and
pass just under the 10,000 foot mark at Windy Point Recreation Area
along the way. Folks looking for an easy route on scenic paved
terrain may access the walking path around the Links Golf Course. Be
courteous as you pass the walkers on this trail by warning them of
your approach from behind.
The trails around Ruidoso cover a wide range of difficulty for
cyclists of all experience levels and some of the finest mountain
biking in New Mexico. You may enjoy a leisurely cruise out to the
Grindstone Lake or challenge yourself with steeper and rougher
terrain. Just a mile up Cedar Creek Drive on the right is a picnic
area that gives access to the “spaghetti bowl”, aptly named for the
interloping maze of great trails for mountain bikes. Good maps of
the forest trail network may be obtained from the Smokey Bear Ranger
Station or the Ruidoso Valley Chamber of Commerce.
Bicycles may be purchased at Western Auto, Wal-Mart and Bone Shakers (formerly Elevation 6784 ). For bike rentals, sales, service and accessories try Ruidoso’s premier bike shop, Bone Shakers.
