SNOW PLAY
Ski Apache
Enjoy the southernmost major ski resort in the country. High
elevations provide abundant snowfall, yet the southerly latitude
allows for relatively mild winter temperatures. Ski Apache offers
some of the best skiing and snowboarding anywhere with 55 trails
served by 11 lifts on 750 acres of terrain. The huge lift capacity
of over 16,500 guests per hour assures minimal lift lines even on
the busy days. Best yet Ski Apache offers more sunny days than most
all other ski resorts. Pack the sunscreen as you will need it.
Amenities include a special program for children aged 4 to 6 called
Kiddie Korral, restaurants, a sport shop, a bar, outdoor grills,
equipment rental and a professional Ski and Snowboard School. There
is a good balance of terrain for all abilities from fist day
beginner to true expert. Apache Bowl offers some great high altitude
open slopes very close to Sierra Blanca Peak. Check out the
panoramic views from the 11,500 foot top of Chair #6. On a clear day
you can see well over 100 miles at a glance.
The area opens on Thanksgiving Day, weather permitting, and remains
open each day through the end of March or early April. More
information can be found by calling 505-464-3600 or at
www.skiapache.com.
Ruidoso Winter Park: Just four miles from downtown, right at
the turn off on Hwy. 532 to Ski Apache is Ruidoso’s one and only
tubing area. The owner has made a big investment in snowmaking
equipment to assure great coverage even on dry years. There is no
walking up the hill. Sit back, relax and get towed up by any of 3
different cable lifts. Find bumps and turns, but mostly lots of fun
for the whole family. Certain weekends and holidays offer evening
hours with tubing action under the lights. Call 505-336-7079 or see
http://www.ruidoso.net/winterpark/ for more information
Triple M Snow Play Area: Driving about 1 hour to the south
finds you in Cloudcroft at lofty elevations over 8,000 feet –
sometimes there is more snow here than in Ruidoso. Triple M offers
tubing and snowmobile rentals by the hour, ½ day or whole day. Try
1-800-SNO-PLAY for more information.
D2 Sleigh Rides: Sit back and pull up the blanket for a horse
drawn sleigh ride. The sleigh bells will jingle and you may feel
like singing as you enjoy your ride. Don’t forget your camera and a
hot drink is a good idea as well. Reservations are recommended. Call
505-257-7836 for information after November 1st.
