Elk Run B
Elk Run B is perfect for a mountain getaway with your sweetie—and because it’s pet-friendly, with your four-legged buddies too (so long as they are at least two years old). This cozy mountain cabin is just a short walk to the Ruidoso River, which is stocked year-round with rainbow trout, and a quick drive to the shops and galleries of Sudderth Drive. And when you’re not out and about, you’ll relax amid the recently remodeled cabin’s charms.
The fireplace is encompassed in stone and will cast the wood-planked living room in a romantic glow. Crack open a bottle of wine, nestle among the plump pillows of the sofa, and watch a favorite movie on the large flat-screen HDTV with cable and DVD player. Elk Run B has free WiFi too, and there’s a charming wooden table in the kitchen where you can play cards when you’re not savoring a candlelit dinner for two.
Speaking of meals, Elk Run B is only minutes from numerous restaurants, serving everything from steaks to enchiladas to pizza. But the cabin also has a studio-style kitchen that includes a small fridge, a microwave, a hot plate, and perhaps most importantly, a coffeemaker. There are of course tableware and cookware as well. During the warmer weather, you’ll no doubt want to take advantage of the gas grill in the yard. Even when you’re not barbecuing, this is a quiet space for kicking back on the covered porch in one of the cushioned armchairs. Sip your morning coffee out here as the hummingbirds put on a concert, or linger here at night marveling at the star-studded sky. Sheltered by the towering pines that surround the cabin, you’ll feel as if you’re in a private paradise—which, in a manner of speaking, you will be!
Elk Run B’s bedroom includes a sumptuous king-size bed and another large flat-screen TV. It’s a true cocoon of comfort—we won’t blame you for turning in early and sleeping late. The en-suite bathroom has a combination shower/tub. When you arrive you’ll find plenty of clean towels in the bathroom and the bed already made up; no need for you to bring linens from home.
Perhaps Elk Run B’s greatest feature, however, is its wonderful location. As we mentioned, the river is within walking distance. When you’re not fishing, you can explore the walking trail that runs alongside it. Grindstone Lake and Trail System is less than two miles from the cabin; here you can fish, boat, hike, ride mountain bikes and horses, and play disc golf; you might also see ospreys, mule deer, black bears, and elk. Just as close is Grindstone Stables, where you can go for a guided horseback ride or, in winter, a sleigh ride. In less than fifteen minutes you can drive to Alto Lake and Recreation Area; the lake is furnished with trout, and surrounding it are trails you can cover on foot, mountain bike, or horseback. Just beyond the lake is Ruidoso Winter Park, with snow tubing in winter and zip lining year-round. Ski Apache, the southernmost continually operating ski resort in the country, is only forty-five minutes away. (Because Ruidoso is ski country, in winter your vehicle should have four-wheel drive or tire chains.) If you need a break from strenuous pursuits, the Hubbard Museum of the American West, Ruidoso Downs, and the Inn of the Mountain Gods and Billy the Kid casinos are all just a quick drive away.
