Horse Feathers’ great room makes up much of its main floor. Two leather couches ensure there’s space for everyone to relax and watch a movie on the flat-screen TV or play charades by the cozy glow of the fireplace. Just behind the living room is the dining area and the fully equipped kitchen. Even if you dine out at the numerous nearby restaurants, you’re sure to appreciate having a refrigerator to keep juice boxes and wine cold, a blender for whipping up smoothies or margaritas, and a coffeemaker for that all-important wake-me-up cup.
If you reel in fish from nearby Alto Lake (which is regularly stocked with trout), you can cook it up on the deck’s gas grill. After all, just about everything tastes better when grilled out in the fresh mountain air. You can dine alfresco as well, at the deck’s picnic table and really immerse yourself in the nature of New Mexico.
Two of Horse Feathers’ three bedrooms are, like the great room, on the main floor. Each of these rooms features a queen-size bed, generous storage, a ceiling fan to help lull you to sleep, and windows that allow you to wake up to the sight of Ponderosa pines. These bedrooms share the main floor’s bathroom, which includes a combination shower/tub.
The primary suite is located upstairs. Beneath the wood-planked cathedral ceiling sit a luxurious king-size bed and a roomy leather armchair that invites you to kick back with a stack of magazines or a good book. The suite has its own bathroom where you can primp and pamper yourself to your heart’s content.
Also on the upper level is the game room. This sprawling space has its own fireplace and leather sofas, making it as convivial as the great room. What’s more, it includes a pool table, ideal for after-dinner entertainment.
You won’t want to spend all your time indoors, though. Located on the deck, the hot tub is sure to be a favorite gathering spot after a day of hiking, mountain biking, or horseback riding. The fragrance of the surrounding pine trees makes a rejuvenating soak even more magical, and you might spy the wild horses that make Alto their home. The wraparound deck also offers plenty of seating so that you can savor your morning coffee while listening to hummingbirds greet the day or sip a nightcap beneath a canopy of stars.
Though Horse Feathers feels blissfully secluded, it’s actually quite close to a major highway, which makes it easy for you to drive to the many local attractions. These include Ski Apache, the southernmost continually operating ski resort in the country; Alto Lake and Recreation Area; the Hubbard Museum of the American West; Ruidoso Downs horse track, the Billy the Kid and Inn of the Mountain Gods casinos; and the art galleries and artisan shops of downtown Ruidoso. (If you’re visiting in winter, a vehicle with four-wheel drive or tire chains is strongly advised. Also, note that you may occasionally hear traffic from the nearby highway.)
Horse Feathers is the best of all worlds: surrounded by nature’s grandeur, peaceful, and private yet close to everything the area has to offer. Don’t miss out; book your stay today!
